Marvel comics has announced that its current Blade comic will be canceled its last issue will be Augusts issue #12. The critically acclaimed series written by Marc Guggenheim was never a big seller. Blade has been featured several times in either a solo series or as part of a team, all with luke warm reception by comic readers. What’s interesting is that the character’s success and popularity is quite the opposite when it comes to wildly popular Blade film trilogy. The Blade films were part of what started Hollywood’s frenzy over comic properties. You would think that success would carry over into comics, but it doesn’t. It could be an example of a B-list character who found just seemed to work better in another medium. Then again, the television show only lasted one season. Oh well, maybe the films were only a success because of its star Nino Brown … I mean Wesley Snipes. Who knows.

I think that the first Blade movie hit at the right time. It was also a “gateway” drug for comic book fans going to the movies again. Not to mention, it paved the way for The Matrix, which came out several months later.
Blade is a B-list character who has underground appeal. The Spawn movie came out exactly a year before Blade and didn't half as good a Blade did, and Spawn was a relatively popular character that was successful as a comic book and popular as an animated show on cable.
The television show was doomed before it began because of Sticky Fingaz being cast. For example, do you think Sci-Fi channel ran with Painkiller Jane because of her popularity, or because geeks think Kristinna Loken is “hot”?
