I think that the first Blade movie hit at the right time. It was also a "gateway" drug for comic book fans going to the movies again. Not to mention, it paved the way for The Matrix, which came out several months later.

Blade is a B-list character who has underground appeal. The Spawn movie came out exactly a year before Blade and didn't half as good a Blade did, and Spawn was a relatively popular character that was successful as a comic book and popular as an animated show on cable.

The television show was doomed before it began because of Sticky Fingaz being cast. For example, do you think Sci-Fi channel ran with Painkiller Jane because of her popularity, or because geeks think Kristinna Loken is "hot"?
