The American Film Institute (AFI) released its 100 greatest films of the last 100 years. This is basically an upgrade over the list the AFI released in 1998. The new list includes films released in the last 10 years. Blade Runner, The Sixth Sense, and Fellowship of the Ring are the only new sci-fi/fantasy films on the list. I don’t have an issue with the number of films on the list, but could there have been a better group of films to represent fantasy and science fiction? At least the industry is giving those genres more recognition, especially since it took 75 years before a fantasy film won. (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King) AFI didn’t even put it on the list.
I think the first Matrix movie is one of the great science fiction films of all time. The Wachowski Brothers combined elements of science fiction with eastern and western spiritual philosophies; however, what movie would I take off the list? Minority Report is another one that I think could have been on the list. Steven Spielberg seamlessly blended film noir with elements of science fiction. Once again THX 1138 was omitted. This movie is known and lauded for being innovative in both sound and visual effects in the movie industry.
The great thing about this list is that it can be debated. Here is a list of what I consider the Science Fiction and Fantasy films on the list. Notice I didn’t include the animated movies. That’s another discussion for another time.
