I finally got to see Speed Racer this past weekend. And there really isn’t that much to say. I never saw the cartoon, and I can’t claim to be a fan. I thought it was okay. The kid in me hated all the exposition and the adult in me thought that Spittle and Chum-chum were an unnecessary distraction. But both could agree on one thing: the movie was beautiful and the effects were great, and the races were excellent (okay, I know that’s three but who’s counting?). Overall, the plot was thin and predictable and the writing seemed lazy. The box office receipts reflect how this movie was received. Don’t expect a sequel. Unless the Wachowski Bros. can somehow find a way to get Neo involved, this franchise is DOA.

The problem with Speed Racer is that its postives cancel out its neagtives. The visual style may have been appealing to kids was a turn off to adults. It tried to pay homage to the orgianl with the Spittle (they acted exactly the way the did in the cartoon, since you never saw it) which was cool for nostalgia purposes but it grew old fast. The film was marketed toward 5 and 10 year boys which is way to narrow of a demographic for the amount of money they spent.
