We are starting to get more information on why Terrance Howard was replaced as James Rhodes in the Iron Man sequel. Click here for the full article.
Hollywood insiders believe the exit stems from Terrence Howard‘s difficult behavior on the set of Iron Man. But those with intimate knowledge of the situation suggest a far more dramatic backstory: Howard was the first actor signed to the film and, on top of that, was the highest-paid. That’s right: more than Gwyneth Paltrow. More than Jeff Bridges. More than Robert Downey Jr.And once the project fully came together, it was too late to renegotiate his deal. It didn’t help that, according to one source, Favreau and his producers were ultimately unhappy with Howard’s performance, and spent a lot of time cutting and reshooting his scenes. (Favreau could not be reached for comment, while Howard’s publicist says: ”Terrence had a tremendous experience working on Iron Man.”)
On a related note a online petition has been started to protest Howards dismissal. Check it out at http://www.howardnotcheadle.com/Site/IM2WM.html.
Here my two cents on the whole thing. I thought Howard was adequate as Rhodes but he didnt blow me away. Nothing about his performance was “military” to me, which was a critical part of the character. If the facts in the EW story are true, the writers where minimizing Howards role in the sequel because of performance issues. Replacing Howard with Cheadle means we will see more War Machine in the sequel. So here are your options.
A. Howard in a small role because of performance issues
B. Cheadle in a larger role (which means more screen time for War Machine)
I’ll take B, I will give up Howard to get more War Machine

Here's what I think. Howard's agent saw an opportunity to cash in on Terrance's newly found mainstream fame. If Marvel wasn't going to offer him a multiple movie contract which anyone who knows about superhero movies, his agent should have insisted on such a contract, then he should have negotiated a right of first refusal contract, or a multiple movie contract with a buyout.
More than likely what happened is that they had a signed deal for more than one movie, with the salary to be negotiated. Since salary is an essential term, if the parties can't agree then there is no contract, and time is usually of the essence. And Terrance is being disingenuous when he says Marvel isn't honoring their contract. If he didn't want to take the offer they made, then its just as much his fault as theirs. Regardless of whether he was bad to work with our not.
People get fired for two reasons being bad at their job and not being liked. You can be one or the other and keep a gig, but if your both its just a matter of time.
