War Machine #1
Legacy characters have it hard, they are always in the shadow of the original. Wally West has been the Flash for over 20 years and he still has people clamoring for Barry Allen to return ( which is happening). I always thought that James Rhodes had the same problem, He has worn the Iron Man armor in the past but we always knew that Tony Stark would return. One method of making a legacy character stand out form the original is to rebrand them (Green Lantern- Kyle Rayner becomes Ion). This how we end up with War Machine, a rebranded Iron man, at least that was my inital impression. After reading # 1 by writer Greg Pak (Planet Hulk) and artist Leonardo Manco. I realize that this time around War Machine may have a shot at becoming a great character and step out of the Iron Man shadow.
Here’s the set up for the new series. In issue #1 we learn that Rhodes is now a cyborg and needs the armor to live. Stark used technology that was totally unrelated to what he currently uses in his Iron Man armor. War Machine uses a stealth satellite as his base of operations. His is to mission to help the parts of the world that seem to be over looked by rest of the capes (can we squeeze a couple more heros out of New York).
